AUGUST

The idea of a one-size-fits-all solution defines the distinction between equal and equitable. Although these words are often used interchangeably they do not mean the same thing. Systemic adversities exist from early intervention, special education and employment to healthcare, mental health and poverty, and these disparities can be exacerbated by age, race, ability, gender and other factors. By integrating proven expertise and data driven solutions MOUNTAIN LIFEWORKS helps increase positive outcomes by expanding the menu of community-based services and supports.

How we respond to disparities facing by our most vulnerable and underserved neighbors says a lot about our community priorities. The CDC reports over 50% of suicides list depression as a major contributing factor, while recent studies show poverty a second key contributor. In 2020 the Dept. of Labor reported individuals with disabilities we unemployed at 2X the rate of those without a disablity, while a US Census Special Report revealed the poverty rate is higher among families with a disability than among families without in all 50 States. These challenges are not exclusive to one day, month or cause.

BACK TO SCHOOL campaign

MOUNTAIN LIFEWORKS believes in accountable systems with checks and balances to ensure no student is left out or behind. Under-funded and under-performing systems label parents as angry or having an axe to grind because they advocate for inclusion. Early intervention is less effective when districts determine services to students based on budget constraints, instead of the specific needs of the individual student.

Parents and communities must be able to trust educators, law enforcement and policy makers to protect fundamental human and civil rights before the interests of flawed policies and institutions. Intimidating students with police, isolation rooms and use of restraints disproportionately impacts outcomes for our most vulnerable and underserved students. The fact systems and institutions fail the very people they are funded to protect and serve underscores a need for oversight, and why they cannot be permitted to police themselves while in control of funding, services, inclusion, etc.

MOUNTAIN LIFEWORKS recognizes there are distinctions between mental illnesses, medical conditions and disability. By balancing public, private and non-profit expertise and solutions we can expand qualified options, create inclusive economies and build stronger communities. With a growing coalition of willing partners and proven solutions we can integrate innovative re-investment in community causes with traditional philanthropic strategies to disrupt the poverty-depression cycle fueling local mental health crisis and suicide rates. We hope you will join our year-round coalition as we go on the offensive against factors contributing to the poverty-depression cycle regardless of cause or community.
