MOUNTAIN LIFEWORKS solutions

The CDC reports over 200 diagnosable mental illnesses alone. It seems unrealistic to expect any single provider, organization or system to be an expert in all of them. Education, bullying, health care, unemployment, housing, poverty and other socio-economic issues are not mental health conditions and are not exclusive to a single cause or group, but they can be exacerbated by age, race, gender, disability and other factors. Mountain Lifeworks considers the data indicating that the poverty-depression cycle contributes to mental health conditions and suicide rates more than previously thought.

MOUNTAIN LIFEWORKS disrupts the poverty depression-cycle through initiatives that level economic playing fields, advance data driven solutions, promote inclusion, train and retain local expertise and create merit-based opportunities for individuals, caregivers and providers regardless of age, race, ability, etc. Different problems require different tools, expertise and solutions. By recognizing there is no one-size-fits-all system or organization we advocate for dignity of choice by adding proven expertise, options and alternatives to complement existing efforts and establish new solutions where none exist.

BALANCING approaches

MOUNTAIN LIFEWORKS balances long-term philanthropic strategies with traditional charity models. Both are necessary for a balanced approach to address immediate suffering and resolve the root causes of the poverty-depression cycle. When a charity feeds someone who is hungry today it is immediate relief, compared to a long-term philanthropic solution that empowers someone to be able to feed themselves everyday. By complementing one-size-fits-all systems, with a growing menu of qualified expertise and proven alternatives we can help improve outcomes and accountibility at the same time.

We know depression (a mental health condition) and poverty (a cost-of-living condition) are the two leading contributors in more than half of all suicides. Pills don't pay bills... jobs do that, and talking about bullying, disabilities and discrimination doesn't make them go away action does. Different challenges need different solutions. By building a coalition of willing and experienced partners we can combat these challenges and contributing factors with real life solutions.
