SEPTEMBER suicide prevention

MOUNTAIN LIFEWORKS evaluates data to identify intersections that help disrupt the poverty-depression cycle contributing to suicide rates.  The CDC reports depression (a mental illness) and poverty (a cost-of-living condition) are the two main factors in over 50% of all suicides. With over 200 diagnosable mental illnesses it is unrealistic to expect any system or professional to be experts in all of them.

Data shows typical suicide prevention efforts are driven by grief counseling and focus on mental health interventions that rely on those in crisis to seek help or self-report. Stigmas associated with mental health, disabilities and medical diagnosis keeps many suffering in silence fearing labels and discrimination. This diminishes diversion strategies that build self-esteem and disrupt poverty-depression cycles.
